PNG versus JPEG format for graphics and images …

This is a funny cartoon posted on a forum at DPReview.com by my friend Bill. He always manages to come up with graphics or cartoons that clearly illustrate his points …

The point he made with this cartoon was that PNG is a bad format for storing images.

JPEG is designed to allow fairly high compression while maintaining the image’s integrity. PNG, on the other hand, was intended to replace GIF, which was a patented format with licensing issues. PNG is good for clean text and graphics, as illustrated by the quality of the text in the two sides of the image above.

And yes, what last part should have remained unsaid to avoid patronizing the reader. But the guy who uses PNG for posting his images might stop by :-)
